Indivisibles,

Earlier today, Indivisible co-led a joint letter urging Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to re-engage talks on the reconciliation package -- read the letter here. If you’ve missed our previous primer, take a second out of your day to learn more about executive action here.

Why would you put those together, aren’t they opposite tactics?

A lot of attention has been paid to the Build Back Better bill stalling in the Senate. Since we want to advance President Biden’s agenda, we’re not holding back on our plan to convince him that a strategy of enacting executive actions is both prudent and utterly normal (FDR signed over 3000 executive orders while in office). So, we are encouraging President Biden to take action as quickly as possible to address issues like climate and student debt.

But executive actions have their limits. Congressional legislation has both a wider range of applications and a more enduring legacy (executive actions can be immediately reversed by the next presidential administration with the stroke of a pen). Because of that, in an ideal world, we would want Congress to pass as many of our policy priorities as possible to promote progress. And, on the heels of a renewed call from Biden to pass his legislative agenda, there’s hope we can revitalize the reconciliation bill.

So, we do both.

We pressure President Biden to use the powers granted to him, by virtue of his elected office, to enact his agenda while simultaneously urging our congressional representatives to put aside partisan politics and pass policies that the American people so desperately need. We follow both pathways -- encouraging our elected officials to enact legislation that will benefit the American people (and the world) both in the immediate future and for years to come.

So, with that, here are your weekly to-dos:

 Your 4 weekly to-dos

  1. Click here to sign up for the Let’s Go Joe Livestream on Wednesday, March 23rd. Learn about the possibilities of executive action directly from us along with some very important guests to be announced soon.
  2. Click here to urge President Biden to take immediate action on climate. We can not wait to address the climate crisis. Every day that we delay is one more step towards an uninhabitable planet Earth.
  3. Click here to urge President Biden to take immediate action on student debt. Federal student loan interest and repayments have been paused for two years now and, in that time, borrowers are saving approximately $5 billion per month on interest. It’s time we give people permanent relief.
  4. Click here to call your senator and urge them to support Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson for the Supreme Court. Judge Jackson is qualified. Judge Jackson has had bipartisan support in her previous judicial nominations. Call on our senators to do what we all know is right: Confirm Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson without delay. And, if you need help, click here to access a resource for pushing back on right wing Supreme Court nomination lies.

P.S. We rely on your support to keep call pages up and running, fund ads to get the word out, and continue all the work we’re doing this year. If you’re able, click here to donate to help fund our work.

 IndivisiWin of the Week

Hershey Indivisible Team, Indivisible York, and partner groups in PA's 10th District went to Sen. Toomey’s office (complete with face cutouts of the senator) to demand that he do his job, show up to the Senate Banking Committee, and vote on Sarah Bloom Raskin’s confirmation to the board of the Federal Reserve. Click here for the tweet thread. By showing up, they managed to secure a meeting with Senator Toomey’s staff to deliver a letter with their demands, a first for any Indivisible group!

Stay tuned to find out who our special guests will be for the Let’s Go Joe Livestream by connecting with us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram and let’s continue doing the work of Indivisibles all across the country in fighting for a fairer country for us all. In the words of President Biden, “let’s get this done!”
