Texas Supreme Court Ends Federal Court Challenge to State’s Abortion Ban [[link removed]]

BY CARRIE N. BAKER | The Texas Supreme Court on Friday ruled abortion providers can’t sue state officials to block S.B. 8, which bans abortion at six weeks with no exceptions for rape or incest. The unanimous decision closed the narrow pathway to challenge the law left open by the U.S. Supreme Court last December. The law, which went in effect on September 1 last year, will stay in effect for the foreseeable future.
“With this ruling, the sliver of this case that we were left with is gone,” said Nancy Northup, CEO of the Center for Reproductive Rights. “We are in a moment of crisis not only for reproductive rights but for our justice system and the rule of law.”

BY ERIN GRANT | Over the last decade alone, abortion clinics have been closing at an alarming rate. Six states have only one brick-and-mortar abortion clinic left. Four of these are small, independent clinics helping patients access critical abortion care.
Nineteen years ago on March 10, 1993, Dr. David Gunn, a physician who dedicated his life to providing abortion services in rural communities, was murdered by a white supremacist anti-abortion extremist. On the anniversary of his death, we celebrate Abortion Provider Appreciation Day as a way to honor his life and recognize all the courageous, compassionate people who, despite the growing obstacles, provide abortion care every day.
