Hi John,

Washington’s 2022 legislative session is officially over and it was one for the books!

The second virtual session brought many of the same challenges as the first, including the continued need for action to address the pandemic and all the obstacles that come with conducting legislative business remotely. And this year, they had to do it all in just 60 days!

Thankfully, those hurdles did not prevent lawmakers from prioritizing gun responsibility this year. In total, SIX vital community safety bills passed this session, including (finally!) ESSB 5078 to restrict high-capacity magazines!

The passage of high-capacity magazine restrictions is an enormous victory, six years in the making. It will reduce the scope of gun violence in our communities, preventing injuries and saving lives. Its success is proof of the power of our movement. And that’s not the only victory we have to celebrate! Lawmakers also built on previous progress to reject armed intimidation, close the deadly ghost gun loophole, strengthen domestic violence protections, and increase investments in community violence intervention programs. All this progress happened against a backdrop of surging gun violence in our region, reminding us of all the work there is left to do to create the safe, thriving communities we deserve. But this session proved how much progress is possible.

None of these victories would have been possible without the persistent and courage of our amazing supporters. THANK YOU for all you did to help make Washington a leader in gun violence prevention!
