MISSILE DEFENSE MONDAYS March 8 - 14, 2022 THE WEEK IN BRIEF On Wednesday, U.S. European Command announced it was dispatching two Patriot missile defense batteries to Poland to bolster defenses in a country where thousands of additional U.S. troops have deployed since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine two weeks ago. Also on Wednesday, the ninth Israel Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) conference and exhibition hosted an exceptional gathering of the best experts and leading figures from Israel and abroad in the Air Defense community. Organizers of the conference included the Israel Missile Defense Association (IMDA), the Israel Society of Aeronautics and Astronautics (ISAA), and iHLS. On Thursday, the White House announced that it believes North Korea is testing a new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) in what the Biden administration called a “serious escalation” after Pyongyang conducted two missile launches which it said were ultimately intended for putting satellites into space. After scrutinizing them, however, US intelligence has assessed that the real intention was to test parts of the new ICBM. On Saturday, a series of missiles were fired Sunday from Iran in the direction of the U.S. consulate in Erbil, Iraq, according to a senior U.S. official. None of the missiles made contact with the consulate. The missile strike came several days after Iran said it would respond to an Israeli strike near Damascus, Syria, that resulted in the deaths of two members of Iran's Revolutionary Guard On Saturday, a U.S. defense official reported that since the start of its invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, Russia has fired 600 missiles and that about 95 percent of Russia's amassed combat power is now inside Ukraine, with Russian troops fighting Ukrainian forces in Kherson and Mykolaiv and attempting to encircle Kyiv, Kharkiv, Chernihiv, and Mariupol. On Sunday, witnesses to a deadly Russian attack on a Ukrainian military base have told how "the sky turned red" as missiles struck the site near the Polish border. At least 35 people died in the strike on the Yavoriv training base, near a major crossing point into Poland used by refugees from the conflict. Russia fired around 30 cruise missiles at the base, outside the city of Lviv, early Sunday, the local governor said. Click here to read all of this week's headlines.
