USA Today: "Don't stop the fight against mercury pollution: Republican and Democrat to Trump EPA"
Add your name and call on the EPA to restore the mercury rule >>

John, I co-wrote an op-ed in USA Today urging the EPA to not go through with a dangerous proposal that would undermine a critical environmental protection.

The EPA's proposal would lead to the undoing of the Mercury and Air Toxics Standards, which limit harmful mercury emissions from coal- and oil-fired power plants. The Trump Administration has put forth a proposal that these standards are no longer "appropriate and necessary" -- even though medical experts and scientists tell us that mercury harms our environment, the economy, and public health.
The environment: The Mercury Rule has reduced the amount of mercury in our air by roughly 90% in comparison to a decade ago. Now, the millions of people who visit Delaware's beaches can enjoy seafood without fearing high levels of mercury.

The economy: Downwind states like Delaware depend on protections like the Mercury Rule to meet clean air standards. Less than 10 years ago, before we had these standards in place, major cities throughout the U.S. struggled to meet clean air standards, which made it difficult for companies to get permits to build or expand.

Public health: Scientific studies have shown that exposure to mercury can lead to learning disabilities, brain damage, and birth defects in children.

The EPA's proposal flies in the face of recommendations from scientists, health care professionals, and leaders from both sides of the aisle.

Add your name and call on the EPA to keep the Mercury Rule in place and effective, and protect our environment, our economy, and the health of children and families across the country.

Thank you,

Tom
