One more update from Florida, John.
FIRST far-right Governor Ron DeSantis injected himself into redistricting by proposing a map that would cut the number of majority-Black congressional districts in half.
THEN when his proposal didn’t get much traction, DeSantis threatened that “he’s prepared to veto any congressional map that preserves the North Florida district held by Rep. Al Lawson, a Black Democrat from Tallahassee.” (Politico)
NOW The Florida legislature has passed a two-map bill: with one map that severely alters Rep. Lawson’s district, and a BACKUP PROPOSAL in case courts strike down the first one.
And get this: DeSantis’ desperation to gerrymander is so deep, that he said he’ll even veto the manipulated maps advanced by the legislature because they’re not extreme enough. His overt attempt to eliminate a majority-Black district is OUTRAGEOUS.
We’re pushing back. The NDRC is on the ground in Florida, and we’re working across the country to stop schemes like this one and hold the GOP accountable. But we can’t do it without your help. Will you pitch in immediately?
