November 2019

Dear John,

At American Rivers, we're not ashamed to admit that when it comes to rivers, we're big geeks. A deep dive into science and economics? A debate about law and policy? A long conversation about threats facing your local river? It’s our job to geek out on this stuff, and we love it.

Brian Graber directs our river restoration program. In a recent interview, he said, “I really like facing a super challenging issue, coming up with a complex plan, implementing the plan and seeing it actually work. We’ve figured out how to tackle and break down the barriers to dam removal. And we’ve seen huge growth. In a geeky way, that’s what excites me.”

The expertise and passion of Brian and our entire team are truly unmatched. It's why we're so effective.

Rivers nationwide are facing serious threats -- from harmful dams, to rollbacks of clean water safeguards by the Trump administration, the list goes on. In this issue of the Current, we show you how we're confronting these threats. Whether it's in court or collaborating with partners, we dig in and work hard until we get the results that you, our supporters, want to see.

So go ahead and call us river geeks. For us, it’s a badge of honor. Maybe you’re one, too?

For the rivers,

Amy

A future of free rivers
More than 90,000 dams block rivers and streams in the U.S., many no longer serving their original purpose. Some are drowning hazards, while others damage river health and water quality. Read our six-part plan for making dam removal easier, more cost effective and more doable on a growing number of rivers nationwide.

The Truth about hydropower
As society grapples with climate change and the challenge of decarbonizing the national energy grid, what role should hydropower play? Read our new opinion piece that charts a positive course for energy production and the rivers that connect us all.

THANK YOU!

Thank you to Bending Branches for its support of our work to protect and restore America’s rivers.
