When you look at the strongest towns across the world and across history, it might seem, at first, like they have one simple thing in common:

None of them were built in the age of restrictive modern zoning. And even if they added some building codes later, the strongest neighborhoods almost always predate those regulations.

So the answer seems simple, right? Get rid of zoning codes, and all our cities will be magically transformed into the most gorgeous parts of Paris! Voila, instant financial resilience!
