Hello,
The Senate filibuster isn’t just a relic of a bygone era of American politics—it’s still being weaponized by Senate Republicans to prevent Democrats from passing needed legislation. It’s past time we get rid of the filibuster—add your name to our petition if you agree.
The filibuster stands in the way of democracy. It’s the reason that we haven’t raised the minimum wage, passed commonsense gun violence prevention reforms, or let Medicare negotiate drug prices—even those all of those policies are popular among a strong majority of Americans.
Even with Democrats holding the majority, we’ve seen piece after piece and piece after piece of crucial legislation die in the Senate after we pass it in the House, all because the filibuster allows for minority rule.
You know, before I went to Washington, I served in the Vermont state Senate, including as President Pro Tem. I worked with Republicans to pass legislation that helped Vermonters. We shared a cooperative spirit that’s totally alien to Mitch McConnell, and we didn’t have a supermajority requirement like the filibuster. In fact, no other state Senate in the country hands power to the minority party the way the current filibuster rule does.
I’m committed to ending the filibuster as senator, but we can make our voices heard loud and clear right now that there’s no place for the 60-vote filibuster anymore—not with the future of our country at stake. The more signatures we can add to this petition, the stronger our case that the filibuster has got to go.
Right now, the filibuster has an iron grip on the Senate’s ability to legislate effectively. That makes 2022 the year we must end the Senate filibuster. Sign our petition if you’d like to play a role in making it happen.
Thanks again,
Peter
