We have big news. Bob’s relentless efforts to hold the Sackler family and Purdue Pharma accountable paid off.

Last year, the Sackler family filed for bankruptcy – seeking a lifetime legal shield from their role fueling the opioid epidemic. As a result of this bankruptcy case, the Sackler family agreed to pay a national settlement. 41 states settled for this plan. Bob did not.

Instead, Bob co-led the group of nine states that refused. As a result of Bob’s persistence, the Sacklers are forced to pay at least another $1.175 billion of their personal fortune to address the damages they caused. $183 million will go to Washington state to address the opioid crisis – that’s more than double what our state would have received if Bob had not fought back.

Bob and his team continue to hold those responsible for fueling the opioid epidemic accountable and recover resources to address the crisis. These dollars will help our state reverse the horrible effects of the opioid epidemic by helping individuals get the treatment and services they need to address substance abuse.

The Columbian ’s editorial board said that Bob’s victory “sends a message.” Across the mountains, the Yakima Herald declared that Bob “earned his keep” by fighting the Sacklers and spearheading the improved plan.
