At Never Is Now on November 21, join ADL as we honor Sacha Baron Cohen, an internationally renowned actor, screenwriter and director who has created a cadre of characters as a tool to expose people’s prejudices.

Baron Cohen, whose grandmother fled Nazi Germany, is the well-deserved recipient of ADL’s International Leadership Award, which goes to exceptional individuals who combine professional success with a profound personal commitment to community involvement and to crossing borders and barriers with a message of diversity and equal opportunity.
Over 100 years ago Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis wrote: “Sunlight is said to be the best disinfectant.” Through his alter egos, many of whom represent anti-Semites, racists and neo-Nazis, Baron Cohen shines a piercing light on people’s ignorance and biases.
Transcending borders through the global language of comedy, Baron Cohen’s work explores the perils of inaction when facing hatred. As he explains: “When I was in university, there was this major historian of the Third Reich, Ian Kershaw who said, ‘The road to Auschwitz was built by hate, but paved with indifference.’ I know it’s not very funny being a comedian talking about the Holocaust, but it’s an interesting idea that not everyone in Germany had to be a raving anti-Semite. They just had to be apathetic.“
