“3.7 million more kids are in poverty without the monthly Child Tax Credit, study says”

— NPR, 2/18/22

Friend — my heart sank in my chest when I read this headline and I’m sure yours did too. After an extension of the expanded Child Tax Credit failed in the Senate, 3.7 million more children fell into poverty in January when monthly payments expired.

As the richest, most powerful country in the world, it is not acceptable to me that the U.S. has one of the highest rates of child poverty among developed countries. And the solution to this devastating problem is at our fingertips — the expanded Child Tax Credit.

By providing families with extra payments of up to $300 per child per month, the expanded Child Tax Credit helps millions of Americans of all walks of life better afford essentials like groceries, diapers, daycare, utilities, and so much more.

I’ve seen the GOP stand in the way of countless critical pieces of legislation, but not having a single one of them support renewing the expanded Child Tax Credit is downright unbelievable. It’s cruel and inhumane to deprive children and families of basic financial stability — and it’s bad for our economy too.

I promise I’m doing everything in my power to make the expanded Child Tax Credit permanent. But right now, we simply don’t have the votes to get this through the Senate and to President Biden’s desk. That’s why it’s so critically important that we help new and incumbent Democrats win in November so we can expand our Senate majority.

Until we strengthen our majority in the Senate, Mitch McConnell and the GOP will continue to block us. That’s why I ask:

Can you chip in $10 right now to fuel our work protecting and expanding our Democratic majorities? Every dollar counts when the stakes are this high.
