Gun Rights

What to Know: A shooting in California is sharpening the debate over gun control.

The TPPF Take: The most common gun control measures being proposed wouldn’t have the desired effect.

From the expansion of background checks to the regulation of magazines or outright confiscation, everyone seems to have an idea of what policy interventions can stop these troubling events from happening again,” says TPPF’s Derek Cohen. “But many of the proposals that have been floated recently would directly infringe on the right to bear arms and self-defense as explicitly enumerated in the United States and Texas constitutions without improving overall public safety.”

Texas Rocks

What to Know: Making a state income tax even harder to adopt is just part of what makes Texas awesome, the Wall Street Journal notes.

The TPPF Take: As the WSJ explains, low taxes—and no state income tax—drive job growth and prosperity.

“People move to Texas because they’re attracted to the Lone Star State’s jobs and opportunity,” says TPPF’s Chuck DeVore, who came to Texas after serving in the California Assembly. “States that drive them away—with high taxes and ridiculous regulatory burdens—would do better to imitate what works: liberty.”

Cooking With Gas

What to Know: More and more cities in California are banning natural gas use for cooking and heating in homes.

The TPPF Take: We’ve got some bad news for those California virtue-signalers.

“In California today, forcing people to purchase electric stoves instead of gas stoves is pointless,” says TPPF’s Jason Isaac. “California still gets 41 percent of its electricity from natural gas, so you’re cooking with gas anyway. And this green push will result in higher costs and less reliability for everyone.”
