As Chair of the Budget Committee, it’s my job to ensure the public knows the truth about the City’s finances.

My report: They’re not good.
The current Mayor’s budget outlook projects four straight years of deficits and relies on one-time revenue resources to balance these budgets.
He inherited a balanced budget in 2013, but despite the good economy, his legacy will leave behind a structural deficit!

More shocking are examples of how the City got in this situation:
|
|
- The Mayor approved a “no-bid, multi-million-dollar contract” for Short Term Vacation Rental tracking services. We know this because an ethical employee reported it to the fraud hotline.
- After the Mayor reported that remodeling of the 101 Ash Street property was “on-time and on budget,” it was shut down due to asbestos contamination. I discovered this by observing warning signs posted outside the building.
- A newspaper reported that after allocating funds to test a backlog of rape test kits, the kit testing policy had been changed; then in response to this expose, it was changed back.
- And the City Auditor reported that San Diego taxpayers are subsidizing trash pick-up for up to 16,000 short-term vacation rentals, in part because the Mayor has refused to enforce our zoning ordinance.
These and other cover-ups have contributed to the financial straits now faced by our City. As your Mayor, I will make fiscal discipline, transparency, and balanced budgets a top priority.
That means: No more political games on the taxpayer’s dime!
I’m talking with neighbors and community leaders every day who are ready for real change at City Hall.

But I need you to help me do it.
I need to raise $10,000 THIS WEEK to supply our volunteers with shirts, materials, and yard signs. Will you help?
The special interests and politics-as-usual crowd won’t fuel this campaign. I need YOU.

Thank you all. I appreciate your outpouring of support.
