Congresswoman Lesko Weekly Update

Good Afternoon,

This week was another crazy week in Washington, D.C.! With votes in the U.S. House of Representatives and opportunities to meet with constituents and stakeholders, it was a busy few days in our nation’s capital.

I attended a Border Security Caucus meeting, where we were joined by former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich to discuss border security and national security.

 
I had a great meeting with the Arizona Multihousing Association to discuss COVID-19 response and recovery.


I also met with the Alliance for Quality Medical Device Servicing to discuss issues that will be addressed in the House Energy and Commerce Committee this year.



After completing my duties in Washington D.C., I went back home to the great state of Arizona.

In the House Energy and Commerce Committee, I pushed back against imposing Daylight Saving Time on Arizona. Arizona has observed permanent Standard Time for 40 years.

Lesko Joins Effort to Provide Health Care for Veterans Exposed to Burn Pits and Other Toxins

I’m proud to cosponsor Ranking Member of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee Mike Bost’s (R-IL-12) Health Care for Burn Pits Veterans Act to provide health care for veterans exposed to burn pits and other toxic exposure during their service. One of my top priorities is ensuring veterans get the care they earned and deserve.

GET THE FACTS: Inflation Hits 7.9 Percent — a 40-Year High

As you may have heard, President Biden has broken another unwanted record. Inflation has hit 7.9 percent. This is the highest rate of inflation since January 1982. However, this inflation is more severe in Arizona! Arizonans are paying almost 10 percent more for consumer goods than last year. Inflation in Arizona is up by 9.7 percent from a year ago. Arizona and the Mountain Region have experienced the highest rate of inflation in the nation. Biden and the Democrats' out-of-control spending has caused prices to go through the roof. Arizonans with low and middle incomes are feeling the pain of these abysmally high prices. Arizonans cannot afford Democrats. 

Lesko Leads the Congressional Western Caucus Trip to Arizona

Last weekend, I led a Congressional Western Caucus trip to Arizona where I had the opportunity to host members of Congress and their staff and show off our great state.

During the trip, we visited Resolution Copper Mine in Superior, AZ. This mine was approved by the Trump Administration, but sadly, the Biden Administration put its approval on hold. If approved, this mine will provide 25% of all the copper used in the U.S.

During the trip to the mine, I got to go 6,800 ft below the surface and see mine core samples.

 
During the trip, we also held a roundtable at TYR Tactical in Peoria, AZ where we discussed the importance of the United States being more self-sufficient when it comes to energy and critical minerals. We also discussed water issues.

Austin from our office attended a ribbon cutting for Surprise Modern Dentistry in Surprise, Arizona. 

Austin from our office attended the grand opening for del Sol Arts and Crafts Gallery in Sun City West, which sells items from local artists in the community.

Monica from our office presented a Congressional Recognition to the Glendale Arizona Historical Society, which is a Certified Historical Society dedicated to historic preservation and supporting scholarly research.

Monica from our office congratulated NoRa Asian Fresh on opening their newest location in El Mirage, Arizona. Arizona’s 8^th Congressional District is happy to be home to multiple locations of this restaurant chain! 

Austin from our office attended the grand opening for Glorious Treasures Thrift Store in Sun City, AZ. Glorious Treasures Thrift Store is run by individuals with disabilities.

Monica from our office attended a ribbon cutting for Martin Auto Museum and Event Center’s newest location in Glendale, AZ.

Casework Highlight

A constituent reached out to our office to help get his 2019 tax refund processed. Our office reached out to the IRS, which led them to identify and process his return. As a result, the constituent received his refund.

Encouraging Story

I am delighted to share this story about Grounded No More Veteran Flight Lift, a Valley non-profit organization giving a joy ride to a veteran in a World War II aircraft. Sylvester “Sy” Becker is a 100-year-old veteran who served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as an engine mechanic during World War II.
