John,
It can be hard to avoid misinformation online.
The news we get from major media sources must be held to a higher standard of truth than the latest conspiracy theory from a right-wing relative or internet pundits and armchair epidemiologists.
News organizations are responsible for ensuring their information is factually correct. However, from the climate crisis and coronavirus to the 2020 election and Putin’s war, the talking heads at Fox News couldn’t care less. Fox News routinely broadcasts false and misleading information -- including personal opinion -- all while disguising this propaganda as legitimate news.
The First Amendment gives the right to free speech, but it doesn't give Fox News the right to call opinion news or lies the truth. That’s why we’re working to get cable companies to deplatform Fox right now, but our campaign can’t stop there.
The next step is to hit Fox News where they feel it most: their bottom line. Join me in calling on American businesses to stop advertising on Fox News and supporting the spread of misinformation masquerading as real news immediately.
Every day Fox News is on the air is another day lives are put in danger, and it isn’t just here at home.
Fox is spreading so much misinformation about Russia's unjustified, unwarranted invasion of Ukraine that Russian state television has been broadcasting their clips with Russian subtitles.
In the runup to the first attack, Russian media worked overtime to cast President Biden’s criticism of Putin as hysterical and portray the Ukrainian government as corrupt. According to reporting from the Intercept[1], Russian news reports featured translated clips of Tucker Carlson and his guests attacking the Biden administration and claiming Ukraine wasn’t even a democracy.
Tucker Carlson is so on message, the night before the invasion, Russian state television repeatedly played translated clips from a monologue where Carlson claimed:
“Democrats in Washington have told you it’s your patriotic duty to hate Vladimir Putin. It’s not a suggestion. It’s a mandate. Anything less than hatred for Putin is treason.”
This isn't simply about the merits of one news organization versus another. This is about information that affects what happens to people, whether they get sick and eventually die from disease when they don’t have to, how they disregard a global climate disaster, and how they downplay war crimes at the hands of a Russian invasion.
Fox News must be held responsible. Join our call to action and demand U.S companies stop advertising on Fox now!
There must be consequences for knowingly spreading lies and disinformation, especially when marketed as news.
Together, let’s show Fox the power of the people.
