Cities are protecting our reproductive freedom

When reproductive rights are under attack, what do we do?

Cities fight back!

John, for the first time ever, cities are boldly and proudly funding access to abortion care. While the federal government maintains its ban on abortion coverage, and many states follow suit, cities are stepping up to show what they can do.

This past June, New York City made history as the first city in the nation to boldly and directly fund abortion care to the tune of $250,000 in the City Council budget! The funding will go straight to the New York Abortion Access Fund to support anyone in, or traveling to, New York City for abortion care. NIRH and the NIRH Action Fund were so proud to lead the campaign to secure this funding and bring that win over the finish line -- and even prouder about what happened next.

In conservative Texas, NIRH worked with Austin advocates and policymakers on their own City Council initiative to secure $150,000 in funding for costs associated with abortion care -- like transportation, childcare costs, or lodging for those traveling for care -- that often make abortion inaccessible and unaffordable.

And cities aren’t stopping there -- and neither are we.

John, from Atlanta to Austin, and from St. Louis to Somerville, cities across the country are introducing ordinances and resolutions in support of abortion access, and NIRH is helping them come up with bold, creative methods of fighting back.

We can’t wait to work with local advocates next year to ensure that even more cities live their values: that every community deserves reproductive freedom.

In solidarity,

Andrea Miller
President
