At Food & Water Action, we fight to ban fracking and fossil fuel infrastructure so we can all have a livable future. But amid the mounting crisis in Ukraine, fossil fuel giants and an array of political leaders are cynically using the guise of "global security" to promote an agenda that would lock in dirty energy for decades to come. They've got it wrong. That's why we're organizing and raising voices to push for renewable energy instead.

The fossil fuel industry and some members of Congress are openly using the global crisis as a business opportunity, calling for increasing fossil fuel production. But to actually strengthen domestic, European, and global security, we need to aggressively promote energy efficiency and conservation, while quickly deploying renewable energy and moving off fossil fuels.
More fossil fuels is the exact wrong approach for both long and short-term crises. Oil rigs can't immediately start pumping, and gas export facilities take years to complete. The real aim of more-fossil-fuel proponents is to fulfill the long-term plans of the dirty energy industry and bolster its position in the global energy market for decades to come.
The threat of climate chaos is well-known. Many elected leaders, from President Biden on down, call the climate crisis an existential threat to humanity. But their actions don't reflect the urgency of the situation. The White House is trying to have it both ways — calling on oil companies to ramp up production while simultaneously pledging to end the fossil fuel era. Rather than approving more oil and gas projects, our national leaders should embrace an all-hands-on-deck approach to move the United States, Europe, and the rest of the world off fossil fuels.
Not only would this make short-term sense, but it's also the only way to end our dependence on fossil fuels and move toward greater energy independence. And it’s the surest way to avoid even worse climate-driven disasters and wars in the future.
Food & Water Action and its affiliated organization, Food & Water Watch, are advocacy groups with a common mission to protect our food, water and climate.
