Dear People For supporter,
The bipartisan House Select Committee investigating the events of January 6, 2021 recently reported in a court filing that they have evidence showing a "good-faith basis for concluding" that former president Trump illegally sought to obstruct an official proceeding, and "did so corruptly." [1]
This is huge – and if the rule of law means anything, the former president MUST be held accountable.
The evidence centers around an alleged criminal conspiracy to defraud the people of the United States by preventing Congress from certifying President Biden’s 2020 win.
Much of the DOJ’s work is done behind closed doors, of course – so there may be efforts underway that the public doesn’t know about yet. But whether or not this is the case, Attorney General Garland needs to hear that we’re counting on the DOJ to hold Trump accountable and protect our democracy from his authoritarian agenda.
If Garland and the DOJ look the other way and decline to investigate these serious allegations, they’ll tacitly give Trump – as well as all future presidents – a green light to abuse their power and violate this country’s bedrock principle of accountability and equal justice under the law.
