Ever get charged a ridiculously high "fee" from your bank or credit card
company? Ever think you are getting a good price for a hotel, flight, car
rental -- or even a concert -- only to find a huge surprise fee?
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) -- led by Elizabeth Warren
ally Rohit Chopra -- is working to slash predatory "junk fees", and they
are asking people to tell them about their experiences with big or hidden
fees.
A new video by our friends at More Perfect Union features two of the
hundreds of junk fee experiences PCCC members have already sent to the
CFPB.

have ever been charged big or unexpected fees by banks, credit card
companies, hotels, or other corporations.

their experiences with junk fees.

Junk fees include ridiculously high late payment penalties, overdraft
fees, fees for making returns, fees for using an out-of-network ATM, fees
for money transfers, fees for inactive accounts with no transactions, fees
to speak to a real person to get help, fees to pay your bill by phone, and
more.
"Junk fees" are predatory. They hurt consumers. They hit the most
vulnerable hardest. And they lead to spiraling debt.
With overdraft fees, a cup of coffee can go from $3 to $35! An
out-of-network ATM withdrawal can match a $20 withdrawal with a $20 fee.
Prepaid credit cards can cost as much in fees as the value on the card.
In 2019 alone, banks and credit card companies charged Americans almost
$30 billion in late-payment fees and overdraft charges.
But we are not powerless. The CFPB is on the case and, together, we can
stop this abusive corporate practice.
Rohit Chopra said, "The CFPB is now accepting comments about the billions
of dollars in junk fees that Americans pay on credit cards, bank accounts,
and loans. Your feedback will inform our use of rulemaking, guidance, and
enforcement tools to combat junk fees."
Going after Big Bank abuse is a great example of why the PCCC
