Dear John,
President Biden's nomination of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court is not only historic, but it's extremely consequential to the future of racial and climate justice in our country.
Her nomination couldn't have come at a more critical time, either. If confirmed, Judge Jackson will serve as the first Black woman on the nation's highest court — a milestone for racial equity and real representation on the Court — and she will rule on consequential cases affecting voting rights, equality, environmental justice, and so much more.
The eminently qualified Judge Jackson, who served with distinction for over eight years on the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, where she wrote nearly 600 opinions, has been confirmed three times previously on bipartisan votes — including by both of Maine's U.S. Senators — and there is no reason why she should not be confirmed now.
Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King will play a pivotal role in the process, and it's being reported that Sen. Collins could be the sole Republican to vote in favor. We must ensure both vote for her confirmation.

Our environmental laws are only as strong as the judges who enforce them. The next Supreme Court Justice will have a critical role in reviewing environmental justice legislation and climate and conservation laws.
Given that communities of color bear the brunt of the climate crisis and are the targets for voter suppression laws, we need a justice who will review the law in an equitable manner with a conisderation for the communities of color that have long been excluded from or harmed by the American legal system.
