John,
There are only nine members of the federal judiciary who are not bound
by a code of ethics of any kind. That’s a problem, especially considering
that those nine individuals make up the U.S. Supreme Court.
I spoke with Alyssa Milano this week to discuss the Supreme Court Ethics
Act, a bill I’ve introduced that would bind Supreme Court justices to a code
of ethics, just like every other federal judge. You should absolutely go listen
to the episode on your preferred podcast platform. But first, will you stand
with me in our fight for judicial accountability by making a contribution right
now?
Supreme Court justices are appointed to serve for life. They are not
accountable to the American people. They are not accountable to the rest
of the legal profession. They are not even accountable to each other.
Under our current system, each justice decides their own code of ethics.
We expect and depend on justices to do the right thing. But as we’ve seen
from recent reporting about Justice Clarence Thomas and his wife Ginni
Thomas, those who sit on the Supreme Court can rule on a case even
when they have a blatant conflict of interest. That’s why we need my
legislation – to create a code of ethics by which all Supreme Court justices
would be bound.
The law should apply equally to everyone. When justices have a conflict
of interest and do not recuse themselves, they undermine public faith and
confidence in our judicial system. It is harmful to the very core of our
democracy. Make a contribution today to help me bring a code of ethics
to the Supreme Court and ensure that no member of the federal judiciary
can undermine our legal system >>
The Supreme Court has built an ivory tower around itself, and they sit at the
top, accountable to no one. It’s time we change that.
