Some day when residents of rural areas of the Eastern Shore and elsewhere in Maryland’s First Congressional District have full, high-speed access to the Internet, they can thank members of Congress who have supported funding to connect rural communities to the 21st century economy.
But one they won’t thank is Andy Harris, their own representative in Congress. Three times in a matter of months Harris has said no to federal funding to bring broadband to rural communities. Harris voted against the spending bill approved Wednesday by the House of Representatives, which included over $550 million for the expansion of broadband service. This is in addition to the $2 billion provided for rural broadband connection in the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which “Dr. No” also voted against.
These significant investments in broadband reflect a commitment to enabling Americans in rural communities to access digital tools necessary to improve health, educational, and economic outcomes. Since 2019, more than 200,000 rural residents have gained access to broadband through these programs. Many residents of the First District still lack this service, and can benefit from this return of their own tax dollars.
But Dr. No doesn’t seem to care about improving the lives of the people he represents. He cuts taxes for the wealthy, but does little to bring federal dollars back home to work for the people, because that’s the kind of politics his high-powered contributors want him to play.
I want to build a 21st Century economy in the First District. I want to bring federal investments in infrastructure like transportation and waterways as well as for research, development, and installation of new energy sources like wind and solar (funding for which Harris also voted against). I want our district to thrive.
It’s time to replace Andy Harris with someone who will bring more results and less politics.
