John,

John,

Today I want to shine light on a critical issue that’s not being talked about enough - our kids’ mental health.

I can’t tell you how many times a parent has pulled me aside at an event recently to share a story about how their child is struggling. They do it privately because it’s so personal and stressful. However, they aren’t alone. The statistics here in California are incredibly scary - 43% of students had a panic or anxiety attack in 2021, 22% missed three or more school days due to mental health and 19% reported suicidal thoughts.

We have to have an open discussion about what is happening with our kids.

It’s not difficult to see how we’ve gotten here - a pandemic that completely threw their worlds upside down and online bullying at an all-time high while social media companies like Facebook and Instagram do nothing about it. Add to that the growing pressures of getting into the most elite college plus a shortage of mental health care access and you see a perfect pressure cooker.

This is incredibly serious, and we have to treat it as such.

That’s why I’ve introduced a new bill - the Improving Mental Health in Schools Act - which will allow more mental health practitioners, therapists, social workers and psychologists to work in our schools and help address the ongoing youth mental health crisis.

Because of your support, I'm able to work on such important issues. I'm incredibly grateful.

If you have a story you’d like to share with me privately, my inbox is always open.

- Josh
