UN Women Deputy Executive Director, Anita Bhatia, attended the Paris Peace Forum, an international event on global governance issues and multilateralism, on 12 November, to discuss the upcoming 2020 Generation Equality Forum. The Forum is a civil society–centred, multi-stakeholder, global gathering for gender equality, convened by UN Women and co-hosted by the governments of Mexico and France.

UN Women fully supports the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in putting “the rights, needs and aspirations of individual human beings at the centre of sustainable development”, noting the close alignment with the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action adopted at the Fourth World Conference on Women in 1995. Women and girls must have full control over their bodies.

This is Generation Equality. Shireen Huq helped found the non-profit organization Naripokkho, which has become a leading voice for women’s rights in Bangladesh. From 1987 to 2006, she served as an advisor to the Danish development agency, DANIDA.

We must get better at preventing violence from occurring in the first place and in supporting the women and girls who experience it. Those responses must prioritize the safety of women and girls and hold perpetrators to account for their actions. Above all, as societies, we have to recognize and adjust the unequal power relations that feed and permit these behaviours.

UN Women sister organization UNFPA is celebrating this week the 25th anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) – a milestone in global reproductive health and rights. From 12-14 November, the governments of Kenya and Denmark along with UNFPA are co-convening the Nairobi Summit on ICPD25, a high-level conference to mobilize the political will and financial commitments urgently needed to fully implement the ICPD Programme of Action.
