White supremacy and white nationalism got injected into the political mainstream in a dangerous way with the rise of Trump and Trumpism.
And right now we’re seeing that white nationalists are continuing to gain major footholds, with more and more far-right politicians aggressively working to advance their cause and give them a voice in the halls of government.
Look no further than the involvement of elected officials in a recent white nationalist conference in Florida, including two current members of Congress – Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Paul Gosar – who spoke at the event.
Using racist hate as a political organizing tool is nothing new. However, in this new era of Trumpism and neo-fascism, the unabashed use of racism by the Far Right is growing – and not just to mobilize the most bigoted elements of their existing base. They're using it to expand their base, by bringing in previously disengaged voters who were recently confined to the political fringes, and by using lies to legitimize racist views that would have been condemned across the political spectrum just a few years ago.
Here’s where People For supporters like you come in.
We’re working to turn the tide, to expose and disrupt far-right extremists like white nationalists, and to hold the politicians that pander to them accountable – including at the ballot box – and we need your help.

People For the American Way was founded more than 40 years ago by legendary TV producer Norman Lear and the iconic late Congresswoman Barbara Jordan as an organization committed to fighting bigotry and defending an inclusive vision of America. One where freedom and opportunity are not the exclusive privilege of just some Americans but rather the right of ALL Americans – regardless of race, income, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age, national origin, or physical ability.

We need to make racism and bigotry unacceptable. That means exposing the Far Right’s hate for what it is – from white nationalism and antisemitic conspiracy theories to attacks on immigrants and the LGBTQ+ community.
And we need to counter the Far Right’s dishonest appeals to white fear, white grievance, and the concocted notion of white victimhood that they work to inflame on a daily basis through their political messaging and their vast media empire, from Fox News and talk radio to hate-filled online forums.
To put it bluntly, this is what we’re made for. And we’re the best in the business. The effectiveness of our research and policy teams is revered among our partners … our communications and digital operations continue to innovate in storytelling that builds movements, especially with the use of video … and People For’s diverse networks of young elected officials, faith leaders, and members and activists are recognized as among the most engaged and impactful fighting forces in the progressive movement.
Our impact can only be as powerful as the support of our members. And the members that form the true backbone of that support are our Defenders of Democracy.
