Statements, Press Releases, and News Statement: U.S. Bishops’ Migration Chairman Welcomes Temporary Protected Status Designation for Ukraine, Urges Support for Refugees On March 4, 2022, Bishop Mario Dorsonville, auxiliary bishop of Washington and chairman of the USCCB Committee on Migration, issued a statement welcoming the recent designation of TPS for Ukraine, and calling “on the Biden Administration and Congress to ensure that the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program receives all necessary resources to reflect our country’s true capacity for providing refuge and welcome.” Op-Ed: We Represent Diverse Christian Denominations, But We Agree on Immigration Reform Bishop Dorsonville joined Walter Kim and Ed Litton, presidents of the National Association of Evangelicals and Southern Baptist Convention, respectively, in a March 9 opinion piece published by Newsweek demonstrating the diversity of religious denominations supporting immigration reform. Statement: Bishop Chairman Urges Continued Prayer and Humanitarian Assistance for Ukraine and Surrounding Countries As the Russian invasion of Ukraine continues, Bishop David J. Malloy of Rockford, chairman of the USCCB’s Committee on International Justice and Peace, released a statement on March 4 addressing the situation. New Coalition Launched with USCCB/MRS as Formal Member On March 2, the Alliance for a New Immigration Consensus (ANIC) was launched with the USCCB’s Department of Migration and Refugee Services as a formal member. This coalition is convened by the National Immigration Forum and is the result of conversations and work conducted over the past year by a diverse group of organizations—faith-based, business oriented, and more—with a shared emphasis on: (1) securing permanent legal protections and other needed reforms for Dreamers, TPS holders, and undocumented agricultural workers; and (2) improving conditions at the U.S.-Mexico border. In addition to MRS, faith-based members include The Episcopal Church and the National Association of Evangelicals. Bishop Dorsonville joined in a press conference announcing ANIC on March 2, which coincided with a letter being sent to congressional leadership. Interfaith Immigration Coalition (IIC): Spring 2022 Holy Days and Holidays Toolkit The IIC is a partnership of faith-based organizations committed to enacting fair and humane immigration reform that reflects our mandate to welcome the stranger and treat all human beings with dignity and respect. Coalition members – including various JFI core member organizations – work together to advocate for just and equitable immigration policies, educate faith communities, and serve immigrant populations around the country. This toolkit highlights holy days, holidays, and special events occurring this spring and shares how you can observe and celebrate these days. We hope it serves as an educational resource as well as a tool to mobilize people of faith to embody their beliefs in seeking justice this season. Other Upcoming Events, Opportunities, and Resources Foster Parents Sought by Office of Refugee Resettlement/HHS. The Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR), within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is seeking families to provide care for children. One way you can continue to be involved in ORR’s mission is to help us get the word out to your network about this urgent need. ORR is looking for potential foster families in AZ, CA, GA, IL, IN, MA, MD, MI, NC, NJ, NY, OR, PA, SC, TN, TX, VA and WA. Our greatest need is for families who are willing and able to open their homes to older youth and pregnant/parenting teens. Anyone interested in applying to be a foster parent should email [email protected] to find out more and get connected with an ORR foster care provider in their area. Join us to pray for peace and for an end to hostilities in every part of the world. It will be another public and unanimous manifestation of our trust in the powerful intercession of Mary Help of Christians, of our educational commitment to peace, and of an effective denunciation of all forms of violence and injustice. Each year, Centreville Immigration Forum (CIF) hosts an event for faith leaders and both clergy and key lay leaders are welcome to attend. Some of the congregations represented have been long-time supporters and donors while others come to learn about our mission and programming for the first time. CIF is a trusted resource for immigrants because here all have a safe space to come together and share concerns and ideas. Your participation and support are important now more than ever. This hybrid event will take place at Marquette’s campus in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with virtual access for those unable to attend in person. Since its inception in 2013, CIII has sought to strengthen the individual and collective work of diverse Catholic institutions, programs, and ministries with immigrants and refugees.
