Americans receive roughly 10 million surprise bills a year amounting to thousands of dollars in unexpected charges. But I have good news: John, that’s going to change. I co-authored bipartisan legislation that went into effect at the beginning of this year that will help put a stop to surprise medical bills. A patient receives a surprise medical bill when they inadvertently receive care from an out-of-network provider -- like when you go to an in-network hospital for a scheduled surgery but the anesthesiologist is out-of-network. Surprise medical bills are pretty common, too, happening in about one out of five emergency room visits and one out of six in-network hospitalizations. The new law will ban most unexpected medical charges from out-of-network providers, lower health care costs for patients, and keep more money in families’ pockets. Thank you, TC
