| Meet our Development Director, Chanda Hurms |
Having served in executive leadership roles as a fundraiser, program developer and administrator since 1999, Chanda has worked for a variety of organizations in North Carolina. With a passion for assisting marginalized people overcome barriers to success, she has tackled issues like – kinship caregiving, aging, juvenile justice, minority health, and in the last 12 years addressing housing insecurity. Chanda resides in Charlotte and is the proud mother of an adult son and dog mom to a 5 year-old Chinese Shar-Pei.

Supreme Court of the United States Denies Republican Appeal of Congressional Maps
On Monday night, in a shocking turn of events, the Supreme Court of the United States denied the request to hear the appeal filed by NC Republicans of the new interim Congressional map drawn by special masters. The month prior, the Supreme Court had upheld the gerrymandered maps in Alabama. North Carolina finally has a Congressional map that is more fair and has opportunities for equal representation.

NC HBCU's to Receive $307 Million in Funding from the American Rescue Plan
All 10 of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities in North Carolina will receive a total of $307 million in funding from the American Rescue Plan that was signed into law by President Biden last year. A total of $2.7 Billion is being distributed to HBCU's across the country. The Biden administration requires that half of the funds go to direct financial relief for students. HBCU's are already using this funding to help with emergency grants, outstanding student debt and unpaid balances and eliminating transcript withholding practices.

Honoring & Protecting Trans Women |

Remy Fennell and Jaida Peterson, two Black trans women in Charlotte, who were murdered a week a part in 2021, have been on my mind a lot lately as anti-trans legislation is passed through state legislatures across the country. In 2021, 57 trans and gender non-conforming people were reported as being killed, which is a record high from years prior. Black and Latinx trans women are targeted the most for being who they are. Remy and Jaida should still be alive today.
Bills that are being passed across the country in states like Texas, Idaho, Florida and many others, are banning gender-affirming care, trans kids from playing sports and criminalizing parents who provide their trans child with gender-affirming care. When most people think of gender affirming care they think of hormones or surgeries, but trans kids are not going through surgeries- they are not medically allowed until the age of 18 in the United States.. Cisgender people also seek gender-affirming care in forms of surgeries. But for trans people gender-affirming care can also look like different kind of therapies, socially transitioning, being able to wear different clothing and/or changing their name. And not all trans people choose to medically transition.
I am keeping a close watch on what the NC Legislature does this year as last year they proposed 3 anti-trans bills- SB 514 that would have banned any trans person under the age of 21 from receiving gender-affirming healthcare and would protect conversion therapy; and SB 515 that would give medical providers the right to refuse service based on their religious, moral, ethical, or philosophical beliefs or principles; and HB 358 that would ban trans girls from playing on girls sports teams.
Gender-affirming care is life saving and reduces the rate of self-harm by 40%. Trans people have existed for hundreds of years, trans people are not new, and they belong here.
