Hi John,
Before I was a Florida state representative… before I was a Run for Something candidate… before I worked for Planned Parenthood… I was a Planned Parenthood patient.
That personal connection is why like so many of you, I'm
pissed that the Florida Senate just passed one of the most extreme abortion bans in our state's history.
Let me be clear: There is no such thing as a reasonable abortion ban.
Unfortunately, Florida isn't alone. This is just
1 of
71 bills that have been introduced and passed in state legislatures so far this year that ban all or most abortion care.
Here's where you come in:
I'll keep up the fight here in Florida, but I can't be everywhere. Filing deadlines in several states are fast approaching, and we need diverse young progressives to be everywhere, at all levels -- just like Republicans are.
If thousands of us put our names on the ballot, if even just half of us win… we can flip the seats we need to stop these bills from ever passing. So here's my big ask:
Run for city council. Run for county board. Run for state representative. Whatever office you choose, Run for Something will be there with you every step of the way just like they were for me.
Not ready to run yet? That's ok -- Chip in a $5 donation (or more) to Run for Something to help pro-choice, diverse young progressives win and run all over America.
There were two things that pushed me to first run in 2018. One was President Trump winning. His rise to power felt like a rejection from the country that my parents came to call home as immigrants. I realized quickly that if we didn't step up as everyday leaders, we would get the same old type of politicians -- the boys' club.
The other was that I love my hometown. I went to school here, I volunteered, I was an engaged member of my community. Seeing Trump win in my district, that I loved, pushed me to put my name in the hat and run.
Thanks to the community I built, Run for Something, and a lot of great volunteers, I won and flipped my district in 2018.
When you focus on people, folks will have your back just like you have theirs.
Right now, women, LGBTQIA+ kids, teachers, workers, and so many others need us to have their backs -- because Republicans are waging an all-out war at the state level. So whether you're fired up about book bans, climate change, LGBTQIA+ rights, unemployment, reproductive justice… whatever your catalyst is:
It's time to run.
Pick a reason, or seven, and Run for Something. Whatever your reasons are, YOU can make a difference in state or local office.
Or, you can give $5 or more to Run for Something, so they can keep recruiting and supporting diverse young progressives as they take up the fight.
Thank you for stepping up, and I hope to see you on the campaign trail.
Florida Rep. Anna V. Eskamani
