Hi friends,

Last Monday, I sat in a drill hall at Anchorage’s Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in commemoration of Veterans Day. During the Fallen Soldier Ceremony, I reflected on the countless Alaskans who gave their lives in defense of our country and of the families that they left behind.

Gold Star families have already paid the highest price when their loved ones were killed while serving our country. Many rely on the survivor’s benefits to pay their bills and put food on the table. These payments are the least we can do for these families.

When Don Young and his friends in Washington rushed to pass tax breaks for the wealthy, they carelessly made these survivor benefits subject to tax. Once the mistake was discovered, lawmakers did nothing to fix it.
