A War In Anecdotes

War is an ugly thing, very ugly.  It is by definition inhuman.  The object is, in the immortal words of Colin Powell, to “kill people and break things.”

That said, I grow weary, very weary, of how the Russia/Ukraine war is being covered.  It is being covered in anecdotes.  AP writes of the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.  Of course, there is a humanitarian crisis in Ukraine – that’s what happens in war.  Stories like that are not news; they are human interest pieces designed to draw readers while telling the reader nothing whatsoever about who is winning and who is losing the war.  Yet stories like...

The First Sunday of Lent

And so, preparations for the celebration of Holy Week begin.  This is the time we center ourselves and draw our focus to a singular point.

I reflect often in these spaces how the Church universal has abandoned its position as a cultural leader and shaper.  How in a search for “relevance” and “attractiveness” we have come to chase the prevailing culture around like fan girls used to chase the Beatles.
