The legislature in North Carolina just passed a new congressional map. The new map passed on strictly partisan lines and no surprise on the result:

Map alert → the map is gerrymandered.

AG Holder weighed in: "Citizens have a right to a fair map and we will not stop fighting until the people have an opportunity to elect a delegation that represents their will."

Voters in North Carolina deserve a competitive map -- the state is a purple state and the congressional map should reflect that. In 2018, Republicans secured 77% of the congressional seats -- but only won 51% of votes. Luckily, a panel of judges unanimously decided that the gerrymandered North Carolina map cannot be used in the 2020 elections.

But when legislators went back to the drawing board, they used this as an opportunity to simply draw another partisan gerrymander.

AOTL is mobilizing our local supporters in response to this manipulated map. We agree with AG Holder that we can't stop fighting. Every phone call, every email, every public comment can get us closer to North Carolinians finally having an opportunity to elect a congressional delegation that fairly represents the will of the people.

We'll keep you posted as things unfold -- the fight for fair maps in North Carolina is not over yet. The one thing we do know is that we need your support! The rapid response efforts to address the subsequent map manipulation caused us to shift resources to this fight.
