So, over the last few weeks, signature collection has been our campaign’s number one priority — and the response was amazing. I can’t begin to express how grateful I am to the thousands who showed up — even in the snow, sleet, and ice — to support our campaign, share their stories, and help us get back on the ballot. Thanks to the incredible support from our community, our team turned in a record 5,645 signatures to the Illinois State Board of Elections on Monday. So John, that means I’ve got some pretty big news to share with you today: I’m officially running for reelection in Illinois’s 14th district. Serving our community has been the honor of my life, and it’s a responsibility I don’t take lightly. In 2018, this incredible team won our bitterly competitive race, helping me make history as the youngest Black woman to ever serve in Congress. And since then, I’ve had eight pieces of legislation enacted into law — reducing the cost of generic insulin, lowering health insurance costs and premiums, improving maternal health care for our veterans, and more. We have a lot to be proud of, but as we both know, there’s still a lot of work ahead of us. And John, I’m nowhere near finished fighting for the people of Illinois. I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and get to work making progress on the issues that matter most — reducing child care costs, passing legislation that will save the lives of moms across the country, and building an economy that works for all Americans, not just wealthy corporations and billionaires. But this team is no stranger to a tough fight. In 2018, our historic campaign defeated a four-term Republican incumbent, in a district Donald Trump won by four points just two years earlier. In 2020, we faced an onslaught of right-wing attacks from our Trump-endorsed opponent and mountains of outside spending, but still, this team persevered — winning one of the closest races in the entire country by just 5,374 votes. We’re in for another tough election this year — Republicans are focused on stopping our progress, and it’s clear they’ve got their eyes on this seat. In the weeks and months ahead, I know we’ll see nasty attacks from our right-wing opponents (we’ve got five of them!), and at times, things may look discouraging. But I know in my heart we can win this race, no matter how much money our opponents spend or how much hate they throw at us, because this incredible team has shown time and again that we’re dedicated to making life better for working families, and we’re willing to work for it.
