It is Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s moment to shine. We are trumpeting her credentials, her record, and the historic contribution she will make as a former public defender and one who brings unique perspective as the first Black woman on the Court. There is no doubt that Judge Jackson has the judicial chops to be on the Court. There has been an outpouring of support from across the political spectrum: Black law school deans, conservative attorneys, high-ranking law enforcement officials, and more. Her courtesy meetings with members of Congress have been met with praise, including unlikely voices such as Minority Leader Mitchell McConnell publicly affirming her qualifications and the appropriateness of Biden’s historic promise. 

We look forward to her swift nomination. Then, we will turn our energy toward getting many more talented people of all backgrounds onto the federal bench.

The Good News: The Schedule is Set

The Senate Judiciary Committee (SJC) will consider the nomination of Ketanji Brown Jackson in just a few short weeks. On March 2, 2022, Senator Durbin released a letter outlining the important hearing dates we’ve all been waiting for. As Republican Senator Thom Tillis noted, the schedule is in line with the confirmation process for Justice Barrett, and fair and reasonable.  

• March 21 – Opening Day with statements by committee members, those introducing Judge Jackson, and the nominee herself. 
• March 22 – Questioning of Judge Jackson.  
• March 23 – Closed-door Session on Background Investigation.   
• March 24 – Last day of hearings with outside witnesses  

We look forward to Judge Jackson shining as the nation watches her hearing. Next, she will respond to questions in the record and the committee will report her to the full Senate. The final vote is expected to happen no later than April 11 when the Senate is scheduled to begin its state work period. 

Pay Attention: Eyes on Many Prizes

The energy we've built to support Judge Jackson’s swift confirmation has put a spotlight on our courts across the board. We are capitalizing on this to highlight the federal bench at all levels. There are currently 24 circuit court vacancies and more than 100 openings at the district level. 

Simultaneously, we are also pushing Senate leaders to move the outstanding nominations that are currently pending in committee, including Alison Nathan (2d Cir.), Dale Ho (S.D.N.Y.), and Charlotte Sweeney (D. Colo.). We are also eagerly awaiting the hearings of exciting nominees like Nancy Abudu (11th Cir.) and Judge Childs (D.C. Cir.). 

What’s Next? Continue to Build Momentum

The demand for a fair and equitable “Justice for All” must drown out the divisive naysayers. As we press forward with our organizational partners and all you dear friends, we ask that you continue to tell friends and family why this SCOTUS fight for Ketanji Brown Jackson matters. Write letters, show support online, and make phone calls to as many Senate offices as possible touting her eminent qualifications and your full support. We want to see this phenomenal woman get all 100 votes. Those who vote against her will have to explain to their constituents why they voted against such a remarkable nominee. The momentum is surging, as we take this crucial step toward rebuilding our democracy.
