When Charles said we are building a movement from the hood to the holler — he means it. Because for him, this fight is personal.
Charles grew up in one of the poorest ZIP codes in Kentucky. Both of his parents had to drop out of high school to help take care of his brothers and sisters, and his mom often went without eating so he could. Charles knows what it’s like to be in the unemployment line. To have student loans. To have your electricity cut out. To live in poverty.
But so many politicians like Rand Paul don’t know what it’s like — and they ignore the needs of their constituents who do. Instead, they decide to give tax breaks to their rich donors. All the while, the rest of us pay for it.
Our elected leaders should be investing in solutions that we know would lift millions out of poverty: fully funded public schools, affordable prescription drugs, and a guaranteed universal basic income.
A brighter future where we center working people is possible. We just need leaders like Charles Booker with the conviction to do it.
