We wanted to share an unfortunate trend we’ve been noticing at HBM: many of our endorsees are the ONLY pro-choice candidates in their races – even their Democratic primary elections.

Yes, you read that right. In many cases, our endorsed candidates are running against primary opponents who do not believe in a woman’s right to choose.

For example, State Senator Erica Smith (candidate for U.S. Congress in NC-01) is running against State Senator Don Davis who has voted to defund Planned Parenthood. And, yes, we’re talking about opponents who are currently running as Democrats.

This is unacceptable. Especially at a time when we are seeing very real attempts to strip away reproductive rights and criminalize abortions. But here’s the thing: no matter how many anti-abortion laws are on the books, women will still seek out the procedure and, in many cases, it will save their lives.

We have proof. Remember the 6-week abortion ban in Texas that currently puts a bounty over the heads of pregnant women and anyone who helps them get an abortion? Well, according to the New York Times, in Texas there has only been a modest reduction in abortions since the law went into effect:

If anti-choice politicians win their upcoming elections this year, it may send women back to a dark place when secret and illegally obtained, or self-induced, abortions resulted in extremely high death rates. Women deserve access to safe and legal abortions, and we are on a mission to elect progressive, pro-choice female candidates across the nation who will STAND UP for reproductive rights.
