Sheriff Candidate John Hemmerling Endorsed byThe Republican Party of San Diego County

The Republican Party of San Diego County has proudly endorsed chief criminal prosecutor John Hemmerling for County Sheriff.

As Sheriff, John Hemmerling will provide the strong leadership, law enforcement experience, and accountability that San Diego needs. Whether as a combat Marine, a tough street cop, or chief criminal prosecutor, Republican John Hemmerling will be a tough, law and order Sheriff that voters can trust and take pride in.

Hemmerling’s career spans 28 years of dedicated service to the City of San Diego and 30 years of faithful military service. He has patrolled the streets, fought to protect our laws, and put his own life on the line to lead courageously in battle.

Hemmerling served nine years as a San Diego Police Officer, patrolling Mid-City, the toughest crime area in the city. Hemmerling is also a retired Marine Corps Reserve Colonel. As a Marine artillery officer and forward observer during the Gulf War in 1990, Hemmerling served directly under legendary Gen. James “Mad Dog” Mattis. During the Iraq War in 2005, then-Lt. Col. Hemmerling commanded an 800 Marine battalion responsible for escorting hundreds of convoys through combat zones, and oversaw four jail compounds.

For the past six years, Hemmerling has headed the Criminal and Community Justice Divisions in the San Diego City Attorney’s Office, led 75 lawyers and 125 support staff, and prosecuted more than 18,000 misdemeanor criminal cases a year. He also served as the top legal advisor to two former San Diego Police Chiefs, including Shelley Zimmerman, who has endorsed him.

As Sheriff, Hemmerling will be tough on crime and a leader in criminal justice reform. He will restore confidence and competence in the department and institute needed reforms in the jails starting on day one. He is committed to reducing violence in our communities and putting victims and public safety first.

A strong supporter of the Second Amendment right to bear arms, Hemmerling believes the “good cause” evaluation process for personal carry permits (CCW’s) must allow each individual to assess their own level of threat and personal safety. He will ensure there is a quick turnaround and direct the Sheriff’s Office to issue concealed carry permits for all persons who complete the required training and pass background investigation.

In short, John Hemmerling is just what we need for our new Sheriff: A tough, smart, dedicated crime fighter.

Please vote for Republican John Hemmerling for Sheriff on June 7^th!
