Dear John,
You hear it from pundits and on social media all the time: Alberta should diversify its economy, and be less reliant on oil and gas!
But is there really anything to that?
A new Fraser Institute study out today finds that as far as overall economic diversification goes, Alberta is strikingly similar to most other provinces.
In fact, Alberta in 2020 was the fourth most diversified provincial economy in Canada as measured by GDP concentration – more diversified than Ontario or British Columbia.
And with respect to employment, Alberta’s was the most diversified provincial economy in Canada in 2020!

Sincerely,
Niels Veldhuis
