Hi John,
Abortion Providers are Magic!
Today is National Day of Appreciation for Abortion Providers, and we’re sending love and gratitude to all of the providers – including doctors, nurses, doulas, clinic escorts, support staff, and others who provide compassionate, high-quality abortion care.
We are also mourning the loss while celebrating the life of Dr. David Gunn, an abortion provider who in 1993 was murdered outside of his Pensacola, Florida clinic by an anti-abortion extremist who was radicalized by a KKK member. [1] Dr. Gunn dedicated his life to providing abortion in rural areas of the South and was murdered for that very reason. Today, providers continue to face widespread violence, harassment, and intimidation from the anti-abortion movement.
Abortion providers are resilient and courageous. Their dedication to providing high-quality and compassionate abortion care inspires us every day. Their relentless commitment to keeping local clinics open and ensuring people can get the compassionate care they need is worth celebrating today and every day.
We’re also sending extra love to providers, especially those in the southwest, who are working tirelessly against immense stigma and political attacks to provide compassionate care to all who need it.
Self-Care
Self-care is an intentional practice that roots us in the present despite the oppression we may face. Regular self-care is essential for sustainable and effective activism.
Here are our self-care tips for March:
-
Use your local library! Libraries often offer unique (and free!) opportunities like classes, meetups, and lectures. Beyond that, most libraries are set up to order books for pick up, so if you've been hoping to read that latest best seller, just ask your librarian to put you on the waitlist and it'll be ready for you in no time. Want something to read even sooner? Most libraries now allow for e-book borrowing and you can get the book you want without ever leaving your home! -Liz, development and operations manager based in Westchester, New York.
-
Do the little things! I am often trying to play catch up. So, I have started a habit of preparing for my mornings the evening before. Every night, I prepare my cold brew coffee, set up my workspace, and make sure everything in my living space is clean and tidy before I go to bed. That way when I wake up, I don't have to run around finding things or do anything extra other than getting ready for my day. -Jessica, digital outreach and opposition research director based in Washington, D.C.
