The Montana Great Outdoors Project is one of our biggest yet. At 114,000 acres and nearly 200 square miles, the area is massive — about half the size of Grand Teton National Park.
This is an incredibly rare opportunity to save such a large tract of land, so please don’t miss this opportunity to help Trust for Public Land protect these public lands.
Montanans cherish this vast landscape of deep forests and 17 crystal blue lakes for hiking, mountain biking, fishing, berry picking, and for timber jobs that sustain the forests as well as the local economy. But the future of this magnificent landscape — and the people who rely on it — need our help.
That’s why Trust for Public Land urgently needs your help by becoming a member today. You and I have the chance to save this unspoiled northwest Montana landscape, while also supporting our on-going efforts to connect everyone to the benefits and joys of the outdoors.
If we are successful — and with your help I know we will be — Trust for Public Land can help protect a wilderness and recreation area that will:
- Protect free public access to 24,660 acres of national forest and state land that would otherwise be landlocked and inaccessible.
- Preserve 121 days per year of public hunting and angling that have been an annual tradition for generations of Montanans.
- Ensure a sustainable harvest of timber and the jobs — 20 full-time workers and 230 seasonal ones generating $30 million a year in economic activity — that go with it.
But we have to act fast, because without a conservation easement, there is nothing stopping the land from being converted to non-forest uses and loss of public access.
Fortunately, Trust for Public Land, working with Southern Pine Plantations and the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, has already secured the option to purchase Tract 1, which is 37,620 acres of land, and Tract 2, which is 76,380 acres, together, at a highly discounted cost per acre.
We asked our members to support this project last year, and we are so grateful for everyone who contributed to help protect these lands. However, we are still $5 million shy of our fundraising goal to make the Montana Great Outdoors Project a reality, and we are asking our supporters to make a gift today.
