BREAKING: Ultra-right wing election denier, conspiracy theorist, and election official Tina Peters has been indicted in Colorado on 13 counts relating to election equipment tampering and official misconduct.
AXIOS reports why it matters: "Peters is a nationally known promoter of debunked election fraud conspiracies and a Republican candidate for Secretary of State -- the Colorado office that oversees elections."
The integrity of the 2024 presidential election hinges on battleground states like Colorado being able to rely on the integrity of election officials such as current Democratic Secretary of State Jena Griswold -- not proponents of Trump's Big Lie.
Colorado is considered a safe state by many Democrats -- but this year is different. That could set the stage for a dangerous situation in 2024.
Trump has already gotten involved in Secretary of State races in Arizona, Michigan, and Georgia. All states he lost in 2020.
New York Magazine: "At stake is control of the election machinery in states where Trump failed to prevail in his false but vociferous claims that Joe Biden’s victory was illegitimate.
"If some of Trump’s candidates do prevail in November, it might make him more confident about running in 2024. He’ll know that in the event of another close race, his acolytes will put their thumbs on the scales and make victory that much more likely."
Up until today, there has been speculation that Trump will give his endorsement to this extremist who was just indicted. That could still happen.
And CNN recently reported that "Should Trump wade into the race with an endorsement for Peters, she would immediately become the favorite to take on Griswold."
