Hi John,
I'm Nancy Dent, a communications officer for the IRC. I landed in Poland last week, and just arrived at the Ukrainian border where I'm joining our Emergency Response team as they set up to assist people affected by the conflict in Ukraine.
I wanted to send you a quick note about what I'm seeing on the ground here. (I'll try to attach some of my photos at the bottom of this email, too.)
I'm not going to sugarcoat it, John: The situation is grim.
It's been nearly two weeks since intense conflict started on the Russian/Ukrainian border. Over two million people have fled to neighboring countries, and Poland alone has taken in over one million refugees. Many of them arrive after waiting days at the border with little or no belongings. Some arrive without documents, which puts them at risk of becoming victims of exploitation and abuse.
I'm proud to be here representing the IRC. We're not just here for displaced families in moments of crisis — we're here every day, all year round, for as long as they need, and we're able to do that because of our generous donors.

This is far from the end of the road for families fleeing conflict in Ukraine and around the world. Please, John, rush an emergency donation to help us provide the continuing care families need to recover and rebuild their lives. What will happen next is unclear, but I know that with your help, we can be there for families just as we have been for families facing conflict and crisis in 40 countries around the world.
I attached some pictures below that I took on my first day at the border. Be sure to watch out for more emails from me in the coming weeks. I'll be sure to keep you updated on the situation on the ground, insights into our emergency response efforts, and stories of the people I meet along the way.
— Nancy
