Dear Activist,
With Trump-endorsed Geoff Diehl leading the field, Republican candidate for governor Chris Doughty’s anti-choice, pro-Trump past still isn’t enough to get him through the MassGOP’s far-right primary. So, last week, Doughty added a running mate with an extreme right-wing record to his ticket.
Kate Campanale worked hard to build up her far-right record as a state representative, proudly taking many anti-LGTBQ+, anti-worker, and anti-safety stances in the Massachusetts House. After leaving the legislature, Campanale strengthened her ties with an anti-choice advocacy group known for pushing harmful abortion bans.
Here's what you need to know about Campanale’s right-wing record:
1. Kate Campanale supported conversion therapy and discrimination against trans folks.
In 2018, Campanale was one of just 14 representatives that voted against banning conversion therapy, a discredited practice that causes serious harm to LGBTQ+ people. Before that, Campanale used far-right, transphobic talking points to justify her opposition to a civil rights bill allowing transgender Bay Staters to use restrooms, changing rooms, and locker rooms that align with their gender identigy.
2. Kate Campanale's anti-worker record.
In 2015, Campanale opposed protecting workers from wage theft and voted to delay the implementation of Earned Sick Time for workers, a law passed by voters on the 2014 ballot.
3. Kate Campanale opposed enforcing the assault weapons ban, even after a spate of mass shootings.
After mass shootings in Orlando and San Bernardino, Campanale signed on to a letter opposing the enforcement of the assault weapons ban. The letter opposed closing the loophole on “copycat” guns, or versions of banned guns used to skirt Massachusetts’ strong public safety laws.
4. Kate Campanale’s close ties to an anti-choice conservative advocacy group.
Doughty himself is anti-choice, so it’s fitting his pick for Lieutenant Governor has close ties to the Renew Massachusetts Coalition, a group that lobbies for restricting abortion access by peddling anti-science propaganda.
Right now, Campanale’s the only Republican candidate for Lieutenant Governor in the race, so there’s a good chance she’ll be on their ticket this November.
While we wait to see which Republican clears the MassGOP’s far-right primary, share the information above on social media, in emails, in letters to the editor, or in conversations with friends, family, and neighbors.
Sincerely,
Allison Mitchell

(P.S. Writing today’s Wire was bittersweet because it’s my last. I’ll be moving on from the MassDems at the end of the week. For the past few years, I’ve enjoyed talking to you, seeing your social posts, reading your emails, and working together to elect Democrats across the Commonwealth. If you’d like to keep in touch, please don’t hesitate to reach out before the end of the week.)
