The House of Representatives is expected to vote to ban Russian oil
imports amidst Putin's invasion of Ukraine.

In October 2019 at the C40 Conference in Copenhagen, Alexandria warned
about the connection between petrostates, authoritarian regimes, and the
rise of fascism.^1

Organizing our society as we have – centered on prioritizing personal gain
and fossil fuel profit over any and all human or planetary considerations
– has consequences.

Climate change is a consequence. Russia’s invasion is a consequence.

It is unsustainable to continue to believe that our system of runaway,
unaccountable, lawbreaking pursuit of profit – whose inequality is so
socially destabilizing that it is giving rise to authoritarians who burn
our forests and challenge the democracies that listen to basic science –
has nothing to do with these duel crises.

They’re inextricably linked and it's time that we use this moment to not
just replace one source of fossil fuels with another, but to invest in a
new path forward.

It’s past time to phase out all fossil fuels, which is why Alexandria has
pushed since day one for a Green New Deal that invests in renewable energy
