Dear John,

Health Affairs just announced three new events for the month of March. Subscribe to our events newsletter to stay up-to-date about our monthly programming.

Effects Of Mask Mandates
In an article in the March issue, Jing Huang and coauthors match and compare cohorts from 394 counties in the United States to estimate the association between county-level public masking mandates and the daily COVID-19 case incidence.

They determine mask mandates are associated with reduced case incidence six weeks following the onset of the mandate.

“On average, the daily case incidence per 100,000 people in masked counties compared with unmasked counties declined by 23 percent at four weeks, 33 percent at six weeks, and 16 percent across six weeks post intervention,” they report.

Felicia Marie Knaul and coauthors investigate the policy response to COVID-19 in Latin America. They find wide variation in nonpharmaceutical interventions to contain COVID-19, both across and within countries.

Their results point to the role of subnational policies and governments in responding to health crises.
Elsewhere At Health Affairs
Today in Health Affairs Forefront, Elizabeth Pollock and coauthors discuss the robust body of literature tying the health of our democracy to the health of people and populations.
