Dear Friends of 5 Gyres,

It's difficult to celebrate anything as Ukraine fights for its freedom, but a new plastics treaty on the horizon gives us a glimmer of light during these dark times.

Delegates from 193 countries convened in Nairobi last week for UNEA-5.2. The result - an ambitious, comprehensive mandate to negotiate a legally binding treaty that addresses the full life cycle of plastic - is a huge win for the Break Free From Plastic movement. Read our newsroom article to learn more.

Delegates at UNEA-5.2 were greeted by artist Ben Von Wong's Giant Plastic Tap. The 30-foot tall installation was created with plastic from Kibera in collaboration with the Human Needs Project.
Los Angeles City Councilmembers voted unanimously to approve a landmark series of instructions to phase out single-use plastic. Stay tuned for updates and action items from our Reusable LA coalition!
Congratulations to the new Dr. Lisa Erdle! Lisa completed her Ph.D. on microfibers last week and joins our team full-time as the Director of Science & Innovation.

What's next for Lisa? She's heading to Antarctica to trawl for plastics! Follow our Instagram for updates from the voyage.
