On October 31st, TransCanada’s Keystone 1 Pipeline spilled 383,000 gallons of dirty tar sands oil into North Dakota’s wetlands. And just weeks later, the pipeline was back in service. This is the 21st spill from Keystone 1. In total, the pipeline has spilled more than 1 million gallons since 2010.
Despite Keystone 1’s disastrous record, Trump’s State Department is advancing the permitting process for TransCanada’s larger Keystone XL Pipeline. Keystone XL would be equally -- if not more -- dangerous.

The Keystone XL Pipeline would carry 830,000 barrels of dirty tar sands crude oil per day from Canada through the heart of America to the Gulf of Mexico. If a spill occurred, it could pollute essential water sources for communities across the entire continent of North America. And it’s a ticking climate time bomb.
What’s more, the Keystone XL pipeline threatens Canada’s boreal forests, “The Amazon of the North.” These are the same forests being clear cut to make Charmin’s toilet paper. The last thing we need is a spill of tar sands oil in these majestic lands.
The boreal forests are not just essential to wildlife and the Indigenous peoples that call these forests home. They also store millions of tons of carbon. That makes them a crucial line of defense against the climate crisis -- which will impact all of us.
The Keystone 1 tar sands spill is just the latest evidence that tar sands can never be safely transported or cleaned up when spilled. We need your help driving that message home.

If this pipeline is approved it will lock us into decades of reliance on fossil fuels -- at a time when we only have 11 years to prevent a climate emergency. It would exacerbate the climate crisis. And it would threaten a wide range of imperiled species, from American burying beetles to whooping cranes.
We cannot allow this dangerous project to ever see the light of day. Activists like you have fought the KXL pipeline for over a decade. You convinced President Obama to reject it. You’ve slowed down the progress after Trump greenlighted it within days of taking office. Now, we need you to keep fighting.
