This 90-minute event will be moderated by SPLC Chief of Staff and
Culture Lecia Brooks and feature a presentation sharing key research
findings and insights from our latest Year in Hate report, led by
Susan Corke, director of the SPLC's Intelligence Project, and
senior research analysts Cassie Miller and Rachel Carroll Rivas. There
will also be a panel discussion on community resilience featuring SPLC
Chief Program Officer Ann Beeson and two executive directors of
community activism organizations: Aneelah Afzali of MAPS-AMEN and Ki
Harris of the Freedom Project Network.
The event will also include a Q&A session and a recorded
conversation with Congressman Bennie G. Thompson of Mississippi and
SPLC President and CEO Margaret Huang about today's climate of
hate and extremism in the U.S. We'll also take a deep dive into
how legislation and policy can help address hate and extremism, in a
conversation between SPLC Chief Policy Director LaShawn Warren and
U.S. Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland.
The SPLC has published the Year in Hate & Extremism, an annual
census and analysis of hate groups and extremist organizations, each
year since 1990. We define a hate group as an organization that
- based on its official statements or principles, the statements
of its leaders, or its activities - has beliefs or practices
that attack or malign an entire class of people, typically for their
immutable characteristics. The FBI uses similar criteria in its
definition of a hate crime.
We hope you can join us today.
