Dear John,
Today, we will be joining our partners in the Wabanaki Alliance to lobby lawmakers in Augusta in support of bills for clean water, economic justice, and equality for the tribes in Maine. Thank you to the many of you who have signed-up to join us! We're looking forward to seeing you shortly.
If you are unable to join us at the State House , you can still participate virtually today by calling the legislative hotlines and asking your legislators to support these bills. Your messages will be written down and delivered to your lawmakers in the legislative chambers.
This will help build the buzz in the State House throughout today’s Wabanaki Alliance Lobby Day!

LD 585 will start the process of the tribes in Maine and the state of Maine beginning to normalize relations. This bill embodies points of agreement reached between Maliseet, Passamaquoddy, and Penobscot leaders and Governor Mills in the areas of tribal-state relations, taxation, and gaming.
LD 906 will enable the Passamaquoddy Tribe at Sipayik to bring clean water to their community. Their water currently contains high-levels of carcinogens and other contaminants and is brown at certain times of year. Some residents have never had access to clean water from the public water supply in their lives. The state and a neighboring community have blocked the tribe from addressing this issue. LD 906 would remove those barriers.
LD 1626 is based on the recommendations of a bipartisan taskforce of Maine legislators. It would restore the Wabanaki tribes' inherent rights to self-govern, putting them on equal footing with the 570 other federally-recognized tribes in the country. This is an issue of fairness and equity. More than 1,600 Maine people submitted written testimony in support of this bill — a historic show of support.
Please take a few minutes to leave a message for your legislators now and urge them to support these vital bills.
Thank you in advance for taking action!
